Methylene Iodide (Diiodomethane)

CAS 75-11-6 · Purity ≥99.50% · Density 3.32 g/cm³ (20 °C)

PalicaChem supplies methylene iodide with ≥99.50% content and a density of 3.32 g/cm³ at 20 °C. Methylene iodide is the densest common organic heavy liquid, above TBE (2.96 g/cm³) and bromoform (2.89 g/cm³). Each batch ships with a CoA covering 6 impurity and water limits.

Applications

Heavy Liquid Mineral Separation (3.0–3.32 g/cm³)

Kimberlite indicator mineral labs typically dilute methylene iodide with acetone to 3.20 g/cm³ to recover garnet, ilmenite, chromite and Cr-diopside. Geochronology labs use undiluted methylene iodide at 3.32 g/cm³ to separate apatite (3.1–3.2) from zircon (about 4.5). For separations below 2.96 g/cm³, see our Tetrabromoethane (TBE).

Gemmological Refractometry (RI 1.74)

Methylene iodide (RI about 1.74) is the base liquid for gem refractometer contact fluids. Formulators add sulfur or other dissolved solids to reach RI 1.79–1.81.

Contact Angle and Surface Free Energy

ASTM D7490 and the Owens-Wendt method pair water with diiodomethane (surface tension 50.8 mN/m at 20 °C) as the nonpolar probe liquid. Tell us your instrument brand and stabilizer requirement before ordering.

Organic Synthesis

Diiodomethane is the methylene source in Simmons–Smith cyclopropanation. State water and individual-impurity limits when you request a quote.

FAQ

Can methylene iodide be diluted to a lower density? Yes. Acetone, DMSO and DMF are common diluents, and acetone is the usual choice for 3.20 g/cm³ work.

How should it be stored? Store in amber containers below 30 °C, away from light. Copper turnings slow the release of free iodine.
