Ethoxy(pentafluoro)cyclotriphosphazene (PFPN)

CAS 33027-66-6

PFPN is a cyclotriphosphazene carrying five fluorine substituents and one ethoxy group on a six-membered ring of alternating phosphorus and nitrogen atoms. It is supplied for electrolyte formulation work, where it is evaluated as a flame-retardant additive rather than as a bulk solvent. Part of the fluorinated electrolyte solvents and safety additives series.

Potential Role in Electrolyte Formulations

PFPN is evaluated as a flame-retardant additive, normally at low loading alongside the carbonate solvents that carry the bulk of the formulation. Two contributions are discussed for phosphorus–nitrogen compounds of this type, and which of them dominates depends on the formulation and the test.

A gas-phase contribution, in which phosphorus-containing fragments interfere with the radical chain reactions of combustion.

A condensed-phase contribution, in which phosphorus species promote char formation at the surface.

Both are mechanisms reported for this class of additive. Neither makes an electrolyte nonflammable, and PFPN does not make a formulation halogen-free — it contains fluorine, and so do the carbonates and ethers it is normally used with.

Phosphazene additives are also reported to participate in interphase formation, so a change in flame-retardant loading is not separable from a change in electrochemical behaviour. Whether the net effect is useful is a question for the cell, not for the additive.

Key Evaluation Considerations

Loading. Flame-retardant contribution and electrochemical cost usually move together. The working range is set by testing, not by a datasheet.

Salt and solvent system. Compatibility with the lithium salt, the carbonate or ether co-solvents and any other additive present has to be established for the formulation in hand.

Interphase effects. Contribution to SEI and cathode-interphase chemistry is formulation-specific and is not predictable from the additive alone.

Voltage window and temperature. Behaviour at the upper cut-off voltage and across the intended temperature range is part of the evaluation, not an inherited property.

Moisture and acidity control. As with the fluorinated carbonates in this series, water and free acid are the impurities that matter most in electrolyte service. Handle and store under dry, inert conditions.

Typical Research and Evaluation Areas

Safety-oriented lithium-ion electrolyte formulation and flame-retardant additive screening are the two the material is most often bought for. It is also evaluated in lithium-metal electrolyte development, in high-voltage cathode systems, and at pilot-scale battery material evaluation.

These are the areas the material is bought for. They are not a claim that it suits every consumer, automotive or stationary-storage cell chemistry.
