Ethyl 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Carbonate

CAS 156783-96-9

Ethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate is an asymmetric linear carbonate in which one of the two alkyl groups carries a trifluoromethyl end. It is supplied for electrolyte formulation research, where fluorinated linear carbonates are evaluated as co-solvents. Part of the fluorinated electrolyte solvents and safety additives series.

Potential Role in Electrolyte Formulations

It is evaluated as a fluorinated co-solvent, and it is the close structural relative of FEMC: the same trifluoroethyl group, with an ethyl rather than a methyl group on the other side of the carbonate. That difference is what a formulator is usually testing when both are on the bench.

Fluorinating one end of a linear carbonate changes the oxidative stability of the solvent and the composition of the films it forms on the electrodes. Whether either change is worth having in a particular cell depends on the lithium salt system, the concentration, the electrode chemistry, the operating voltage, the temperature range, the rest of the solvent blend, the other additives and the formation protocol. It is not a catalyst, and it does not act on its own.

Key Evaluation Considerations

Co-solvent ratio. The proportion against the conventional carbonates is the first variable, and it is set by testing.

Interphase behaviour. Contribution to anode and cathode interphase chemistry is formulation-specific. Results reported for one cell design do not transfer unchanged to another.

Upper cut-off voltage. Oxidative behaviour at the intended cut-off is established for the formulation in hand.

Low-temperature behaviour. Viscosity and conductivity across the intended temperature range are part of the evaluation.

Moisture and free acid. Water and acidity are the impurities that matter most for a carbonate in electrolyte service. Handle and store under dry, inert conditions.

Typical Research and Evaluation Areas

Lithium-ion battery electrolyte research and solvent-blend and co-solvent screening are the two the material is most often bought for. It is also evaluated in lithium-metal electrolyte development, in high-voltage cathode systems, and at pilot-scale battery material evaluation.

These are the areas the material is bought for, not a claim of suitability across every cell chemistry.
